Certifications & Licensure of a Travel Agent or Travel Counselor?

Here's the information you've been waiting for! Yes, Travel Agents or Travel Counselors do need to obtain both certifications and licensure in certain local or state jurisdictions.

Here is the pertinent information you will need to get started running your very own independent or affiliate Travel agency from your home or office. If you're interested in becoming a Travel Agent or Travel Counselor that is employed by a corporation, you may still need to obtain the appropriate certifications they may require. Here is a list of the most common and recommended certifications for Travel Agents or Travel Counselors:

* IATAN Certification: Global status for Travel Agents or Travel Counselors

* Airlines Reporting Corporation: Verified Travel Consultant Program

* YTB Travel Agent: Become a certified Travel Agent or Travel Counselor

* Cruise Line International:  Travel Agent or Travel Counselor Certification

Now, licensure is a completely different story! If you’re looking to start a real business then you must know your state laws. The following states require you to be licensed to run and operate a travel agency: California, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Washington. If you live in one of these 14 states then you will need to find a school that offers training. Luckily there are schools in most of these states. You could also do a search to find a school that allows you to take the classes online. If you go through a college near you, financial aid can assist you. Check with your state's Department of Commerce for any registration or certification requirements for Travel Agents or Travel Counselors.
